Listen, before I get into this review, can I just take a moment to talk about how weird 2020 has been, specifically relating to movies? As someone who lives in a large-ish city that has multitudes of theater options, that played almost any and every release that came out…I was spoiled. I had multiple subscription services and would go to the theater 100+ times a year. However, 2020 has been pretty much limited to Netflix Originals and indie film festivals. So I was excited to be able to watch Come Play, a PG-13 studio horror film.

Come Play is a movie about an invisible character with ominous intentions. Similar to It Follows, you’re constantly scanning the screen wondering when & where the creature (named Larry) will show up. It’s not action packed or super fast paced, but it doesn’t give the audience much time to take a breath & relax; a good thing. The story is fine, performances are solid (Gillian Jacobs, John Gallagher Jr)…but it feels lacking of something I can’t quite put my finger on. It’s a studio film during a time in which I haven’t experienced many, which was refreshing in its own right. Ultimately though, it never fully clicked with me, and I was left a tad underwhelmed.
