It’s Another Kind of Cabin Fever in ‘Blood Conscious’

A vacationing family sets out to their lakeside cottage for a relaxing weekend getaway. When they arrive, they find themselves in the middle of a horrific mass murder. When they’re confronted by the shooter, he claims he’s fighting demons and that have possessed everyone. The tables are turned when they trap him in the cellar of the cottage, but he tells them he’s not alone down there.

I’m not going to lie, while I love a vintage 80s horror vibe, I also find it largely overplayed these days. The trailer does it well in some ways – the 4:3 aspect ratio feels like I’m watching a VHS trailer, but you’ll have a hard time convincing me the synthesizer sound track is not just Stranger Things playing in the background. As for the story itself, the trailer doesn’t give much away, and what it does show feels stale and disjointed. But I’m not ready to give up on it. Early reviews of the film applaud Blood Conscious on their story-telling in spite of a small budget and tiny cast. The cast has also received a lot of praise with lead actor Oghenero Gbaje (Black is King) receiving the Audience Choice Award for Best Actor at Panic Fest.

Blood Conscious is available now on VOD.
