News of a defaced grave brings Marie to the small, desolate island town where her mother is buried. Offseason is the latest effort from indie horror director Mickey Keating (Darling, Psychopaths). It’s a visually compelling piece, buoyed by its cinematography as Keating reunites with longtime collaborator Mac Fisken. It carries a floaty, nigh otherworldly tone despite its grounded locale, which should please plenty of moviegoers. As for the story, the film makes effective use of its tight run time to explore its themes and imagery, but rushes past some of the finer points of the lore at its center. This is most apparent as the film comes to its climax, which is unfortunate. That being said, it’s still entertaining, and should be a welcome addition to Keating’s filmography for his fans.

Great visuals.
Eerie island vibes.
Doesn’t go "full walrus" enough.
