Jordan Graham’s folklore horror film Sator is the kind of movie you need to see for yourself. As a piece of art, it carries a strong sense of confidence and intentionality throughout. It tells a simple story slowly and complexly, with a suffocating sense of atmosphere. Narratively it focuses on a man, alone in the woods and hunting a malevolent entity that torments his family. Interspersed through the film are flashbacks, both voyeuristic vignettes and home video-esque snippets, that flesh out the world of Sator. That being said, the movie still manages to be a bit obtuse, which may be a turn off for some viewers. It’s a peculiar flavor of film, perhaps even an acquired taste. However for those who do enjoy slow burns, creepy forests, and modern takes on folklore, Sator will no doubt be a hit.
