It’s rare in a big-budget film to feel the excitement the creators had during the production on set. But when you do have this sense, it makes the viewing so much more enjoyable. One such film is 1983’s creature feature, The Deadly Spawn. Shot on a shoestring budget with a cast and crew of relatively unknowns, you can’t deny the pure enjoyment and effort director Douglas McKeown put forth dragging his man-eating monster from outer space into the basement of an unsuspecting family. The acting isn’t very great, but that doesn’t detract from the fun of the film. The characters are just food for the monster and its spawn, thankfully the effects and gore are done in extreme detail which means plenty of blood. A VHS community gem, you’ll have to find some creative ways to track this amazing film down.

POS
It’s great to see creative people put their heart and souls into a project
Teeth…the creature has a TON of teeth
Fantastic effects without the crutch of CGI. Practical at its best.
NEG
The acting is stale and can be hard to not chuckle a bit when watching it
Everything you can say is negative about this film is budget based. Too bad a few more bucks couldn’t have been thrown at this production.
