Re-imagining Hollywood’s horrors have always been an easy way to greenlight a film to make studios a few blood-soaked bucks. Thankfully in 1988, director Chuck Russell set out to revive life into an oozy 1950’s sci-fi classic in a decade where slashers hacked their way to the top of the box-office. The Blob is a straightforward B-movie scenario; meteor crash lands, unleashes a blob-like alien, creature snacks on citizens, growing larger with each meal, and mulleted bad boy Brian Flagg battles the creature and the evil government agency in order to save the world. The Blob is a fun reminder that remakes don’t have to always be subpar to the original, in fact, this is much better in most ways to the 1958 version, but mostly due to the amazingly gooey practical effects which give the alien life.

POS
Outstanding practical special effects provide a slimier and gorier version of the story
Nice to view a creature feature with ’80s sensibilities not called, 'The Thing'
Decent performances from genre legends early in their careers
NEG
Some of the special effects might not hold up to today’s CGI standards
Brian Flagg’s mullet
