A 666-Character Review of ‘Swamp Thing’ (2019)

DEVELOPED BY
Gary Dauberman & Mark Verheiden

Sent to investigate a mysterious illness in her hometown, Abby Arcane discovers something much bigger and darker in the swamps of Marais, Louisiana. Season one of Swamp Thing is centered on Abby’s investigation and the transformation of Alec Holland into the titular monster. It’s essentially an origin, which may be tiring to some, but this was meant as a first season and not an entire series, so it makes sense. The effort proves well worth it as James Wan crafts a haunting story for Alec and the people of Marais, Louisiana. It’s high on intrigue and lore, laying plenty of groundwork for future seasons with villains and allies alike being teased. With some legitimately terrifying moments and gruesome visuals, the only thing that makes it hard to recommend DC’s Swamp Thing is that it’s over.
