A 666-Character Review of ‘One Cut of the Dead’

Release Date

Shinichirou Ueda

One Cut of the Dead is essentially three films in one. First, there is a 40 minute meta zombie film with one amazing continuous cut. The second occurs after that film’s credits and shows how it was created and the third is during the credits, showing bits of how it was actually filmed. The zombie movie at the beginning is fun, but has some weird choices that are later hilariously explained. The rest of the second film is farcical fun with a lot of improvising and the cast and crew frantically dealing with mishap after mishap. At its core, the director keeps the whole thing grounded with his emotions and his determination to make the movie work. His relationship with his daughter is strained and he’s struggling to find a new way to connect with her. Overall, One Cut of the Dead is so heartfelt and fun.
