The Story Behind the American Horror Story Season 5 Top Hat

We recently learned that Lady Gaga would be joining season 5 of American Horror Story, and that the season would be called ‘Hotel’.  However, there was still some mystery surrounding the hints about season 5 that creator Ryan Murphy placed in episodes of “Freak Show” this year.  Murphy spoke to Entertainment Weekly specifically about a top hat printed on a paper coffee cup, calling it a “very purposeful” clue.

After much speculation – including everything from aliens to US Army operations – we finally have clarity! The clue was referencing the 1935 Ginger Rogers/Fred Astaire flick “Top Hat” – which is set at a hotel in London. The finale of the film – “Top Hat, White Tie and Tails,” features an odd dance number, with Fred Astaire pointing his cane like a weapon, aimed at all of the backup dancers. To add another layer, the academy award nominated song “Cheek to Cheek,” – which also served as the title of the Gaga/Bennett duets album – was written for the movie “Top Hat.”  I’m probably reaching a bit too far, but it will be fun to see how much, if at all, this old film plays into the fifth season of AHS.  Can’t wait to see more details emerge – this could be the best year of the series yet.
