Staff Picks: September 2nd, 2020

This week we are taking you back to school. Our scholarly staff is ready to educate you with a few films to get you through the horrors of kicking off a new semester.

The Girl with All the Gifts

Ok, so I admit this is a strange choice for ‘Back to School Horror’. But you do get a tiny peek into what a post-apocalyptic school might look like (hint: you get to decide if it’s a nightmare for the teacher or the students). I know some of you might be ‘zombied out’ but trust me this is not your garden variety zombie film, though the terror is still there. The relationship between Miss Justineau and Melanie was very sweet and relatable, and might just warm your heart up in time for your next Zoom class.

Cooties

When a zombie virus only effects the prepubescent, a group of elementary school teachers find themselves in a fight for their lives. Cooties is a fun, fast horror-comedy with a solid script and a strong cast. If you’re looking for something lighter that will make you laugh, this is the one for you.

The Faculty

Fall is in the air: the temperature is starting to lower, the sun is setting earlier, the mornings feel crisp and chilly, and it’s time to go back to school. Let’s just hope this year doesn’t involve the teachers trying to murder all the students, which is exactly the case in Robert Rodriguez’s The Faculty. The Faculty is 90’s horror at its best (worst?). First off, you have a cast featuring Josh Hartnett, Elijah Wood, Clea DuVall, and Jordana Brewster. Not to mention the “adult” cast of teachers and faculty members, which include Famke Janssen, Jon Stewart, and Selma Hayek. This movie is a great way to kick off the early days of fall, when you’d be attending your local Homecoming event. Tons of action, some creatures in the mix, and a super 90’s soundtrack…this movie is a must-watch when you want to relive high school memories.

Ghoulies 3: Ghoulies Go To College

Nothing says college in the 90’s more than a good ol’ fashion “Prank Week” to ring in the new year and crown a deserving frat to be kings of the yank. Little do they realize, the Ghoulies have been summoned and are pretty good prankers themselves. Satanic rituals, an evil professor, towers of beer cans, panty raids, and 3 of the raddest little demons you’ll ever meet are what awaits the students at Glazier College. This is a great party horror-comedy with amazing puppetry, creative kills, not so stellar acting, but is guaranteed to be a fun watch.
