A 666-Character Review of ‘The Brood’

Few things are more frightening than receiving therapy concerning childhood abuse. But when that therapy turns you into a full-blown psychopath who has the ability to pro-create murderous spawn… Well, the fright-o-meter shoots straight into the stratosphere.

The Brood, written and directed by David Cronenberg, follows Frank Carveth, a father (Art Hindle), who’s determined to ensure his daughter doesn’t fall victim to Nola Carveth’s, his wife (Samantha Eggar), violent attacks. However, Hal Raglan, Nola’s psychiatrist (Oliver Reed), is set on keeping her in therapy.

The Brood is filled with uncomfortable moments—courtesy of Raglan’s treatment, “psychoplasmics”—and exquisite and unconventional body transformation scenes. The film’s bizarre story also makes it a great candidate for repeat watches.
