A 666-Character Review Of ‘Maniac (1980)’

Frank Zito (played by Joe Spinell) is a monster. Filthy, unstable, and unfortunately…experienced. I found myself drawn to him every second he’s on screen…I don’t want him out of my sight. A moment where the forth wall is knocked down made my skin crawl. Shots that linger despite telepathic moans of discomfort, ride on Jay Chattaway’s score. Creeping, soft strings that build, screaming like a tea kettle. I mean, a full twenty-seconds dedicated to one shotgunned (Tom Savini) head? Extended stalkings with dagger stabs? Yeah, this is not a perfect film, but it’s an horrifying snapshot of sleazy, 80s New York City, with an ending that won’t soon be forgotten.
