A 666-Character Review Of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)’

When the only way to evade a killer is by avoiding a basic human need, you are completely vulnerable. This film is many horror fans’ first experience with the genre. Despite cheesy dialogue characteristic of the 80’s, Nightmare holds up well for its time. The scares are effective because the concept of a nightmare coming to life is completely terrifying. Especially after learning that this Wes Craven film was inspired by the true story of a young Cambodian refugee who died mysteriously in his sleep after his parents heard screams coming from his room. The film also boasts some fun kills and over-the-top gore effects, a la Johnny Depp turning into a blood fountain as Freddy drags him into dreamland.  The original Nightmare on Elm Street will forever be one of the best slasher films of all time.
