A 666-Character Review of ‘Unfriended: Dark Web’

Upon discovering disturbing videos on a lifted laptop, Matias (Colin Woodell) finds himself hacked, and in a hazardous situation. The theft-victim/mysterious cyber-creep needs his nefarious property back, and until he does, the lives of everyone Matias cares about (that are online) are fair game. We’ve returned to a similar template, but the creeping dread of the first film has been replaced with a more manic energy. Real-time vibes have been all but abandoned. And while I think this film was taken seriously, it’s less deadly in that regard. The kills exist, but with entertainment at the forefront, leaving gore at the door. Is this film better than the original? Not quite. Do I support the direction of this franchise as a potential monitor-horror anthology series? More than you know.
