A 666-Character Review of ‘The Vanished’

Yoon Seol-Hee, insanely rich business owner, dies suddenly, leaving everything to her pathetic trophy husband Jung-Sik. Her body goes missing, leading Detective Park on a complicated investigation to figure out if she is even dead and who killed her if so. The Vanished is a mystery thriller with so many twists and turns. Many scenes have a stylized, overdramatic nature that gives it a soap opera veneer. There are a few creepy moments, but the stylistic choices kill the tension.  The crazy revelations at the end support the style as well. I wasn’t even close to predicting what’s truly happening. It’s fun to see the mystery unfold, as over the top as it is. The ending has some emotional moments, despite how most of the characters are one dimensional and prone to monologues about their secrets.

The Vanished was screened as party of the Fantasia International Film Festival ’18
