Scary Movie is arguably the most earnest attempt at parody the ‘[Insert Genre] Movie’ game has ever seen. It borrows heavily from Scream, but takes notes from I Know What You Did Last Summer too. It’s full of copious references to the horror of yesteryear, all wrapped up in some truly crass humor. It works and it doesn’t, and while there is something sort of fun about it, it hasn’t aged too well. While it has fun with its source material, plenty of the humor and characters come from things like homosexuality, mental disability, and racial stereotypes. It’s not a good look for anyone, and it sullies the film some. If late 90s horror and immature humor are your thing (and you can look past some of the “jokes”) then this is a decent sendup of the genre, but there’s a decent chance this just isn’t for you.
