Michael Shannon to Star in ‘the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari’ Contemporary Take from ‘As Above So Below’ Folks

The uncompromising Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water, Bug, Take Shelter) has been cast as the enigmatic, titular Doctor Caligari in Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders, a modern reimagining of the 1920 German Expressionist landmark. John Erick Dowdle (As Above So Below, Quarantine, Devil) directs from his own screenplay, with his brother and producing partner Drew Dowdle handling production duties through Brothers Dowdle Productions.

This reunites Shannon with the Dowdle Boys™ after their Emmy-nominated collaboration on the Waco miniseries (best series that year IMO), where the trio developed what Dowdle calls “the trust and creative shorthand” necessary for this project. “Having worked with Michael Shannon on multiple projects, my brother and I have seen firsthand the unnerving intensity he can bring to even the simplest moments,” Dowdle said. “The idea of seeing him play the horrifying Doctor Caligari became an obsession for us.”

The film follows Doctor Caligari, a traveling mesmerist who journeys from town to town with a sleepwalker under his hypnotic control, leaving grisly murders in their wake. When a young woman’s boyfriend disappears mysteriously, she suspects Caligari is responsible. The problem is…nobody believes her.

Robert Wiene’s 1920 original is widely considered the first true horror film, establishing German Expressionism as cinema’s first visual language for psychological terror. Its influence spans from Universal’s classic monster movies through Tim Burton’s entire aesthetic vocabulary. The film’s jagged landscapes, distorted perspectives, and exploration of madness versus sanity created a template that horror has been mining for over a century.

Anton is fully financing the project and handling worldwide rights at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, with CAA Media Finance co-repping North American rights. Sébastien Raybaud (Victorian Psycho, The Night House) and Brandt Wrightsman produce for Anton alongside Drew Dowdle and Stuart Manashil (His House, Pieces of a Woman).

Principal photography begins June 2026.
