A 666-Character Review of ‘Stranger Things: The Game’

Stranger Things: The Game is a mobile app produced by BonusXP, Inc. Its canonicity is sketchy at best, but that doesn’t take away from the fun. Players start out as Jim Hopper and add to their team over the course of six chapters. Characters’ special abilities help progress the story and open up new possibilities in old areas. The resulting gameplay isn’t terribly deep and some ideas get recycled, but it’s a pleasant distraction. Some aspects could use a bit of polish, but it’s entertaining regardless, and breezy even on the harder setting. The art style is charming and retro, but closer to SNES graphics than what the Hawkins AV Club would have played in 1984. It’s free, fun, and only a few hours. Fans of the show looking for something to hold them over until the 27th may want to check this one out.
