Scientists Study Awfulness in ‘They Remain’

The suspense is palpable in the trailer for They Remain, a feature film based on author Laird Barron’s short story “-30-.” Maybe I’m just partial to minimalist previews, but the opening shot of this roped me in. As a whole, the audience is given just enough to put this on their watchlist without giving away all of the scariest plot points, as some movies often do.

Two scientists who share a romantic history are tasked with investigating unnatural animal behavior on the site of a Manson Family-style cult’s compound.

The tension between actors William Jackson Harper (The Good Place) and Rebecca Henderson (Manhunt: Unabomber, Desiree Akhavan’s Appropriate Behavior) paired with the uncertainty of what their characters are investigating leaves a lot to be explored. Will someone go crazy from being in isolation in the middle of nowhere? What’s this sexual tension that is briefly touched upon? Is this going to take a sci-fi turn or will it perhaps involve a haunting?

Answers to these questions can be found upon the film’s theatrical release on March 2nd.
