A 666-Character Review Of ‘The Eyes of My Mother’

Lonely Francisca looks for new companions after her father dies, but has trouble finding the perfect person. Her unabashed madness understandably puts people off along with her fascination of human anatomy and her desire for control over people. Despite having a short run time, the film seems interminable. Each scene runs uncomfortably long, almost like the audience is an unwelcome voyeur in Francisca’s private world. Scenes often feature the prelude or aftermath of violence, allowing the audience to fill in the blanks and visualize it worse than any filmmaker could create. This technique also gives the film a quiet, almost peaceful quality despite its overall troubling tone. The Eyes of My Mother is a visually stunning film that contrasts with the disturbing nature of its scenes.
