A 666-Character Review of ‘Detention’ (2011)

Detention has it all: hormonal teenage angst, a super on-the-nose slasher movie character who likes to slice and dice their victims, and one time-traveling bear. But just because this 2011 film has it all doesn’t mean it’s all clearly articulated or good. The first half of this science-fiction/horror mashup is a tad slow. However the movie’s teenage tropes are fun to follow and somewhat reminiscent of other high school-based films. And once the film’s last half kicks into gear—thanks to a music-heavy montage in, of course, detention—fun and confusion ensue; high school tropes fall by the wayside and sci-fi strangeness takes the wheel until the film’s finale.
