A 666-Character Review of ‘Blue My Mind’

Fifteen year old Mia adapts to a new town far from the ocean, a new school, and changes to her body that go beyond simple puberty. Blue My Mind is a realistic coming of age story with a splash of fantasy and body horror. Mia rebels against her parents and teachers by acting tough and joining a group of girls who drink, have casual sex, and do drugs. Her physical transformation of webbing and scales on her skin sets her so far apart when all she wants to do is fit in. This is a source of self loathing prompts her more and more extreme self destructive behavior. Even though it started out rough, the friendship she makes with Gianna runs deep. Gianna goes above and beyond to help her and understands even in the face of the bizarre truth. Blue My Mind realistically shows a teenager’s struggle to find herself.
