A 666-Character Review of ‘Felt’

Felt uniquely explores the topic of sexual violence with a tone reminiscent of Todd Solondz’ Happiness; a state of nervous discomfort – the visual equivalent of nails on a chalkboard, but impossible to turn away from – permeates all 80 minutes of screen time. This tension always pushes me into a deeper investigation of the purpose and effect of the piece I am watching, but when the topic is as real and pervasive as rape, the impact is different. We watch as Amy, an artist unraveling at the hands of past sexual traumas, turn to alter egos, bizarre costumes, and unnecessary cruelty in an attempt to regain control of her life. We see the very real first-hand effects of rape, then the equally tragic collateral damage as the victim transforms into a monster herself. Deeply disturbing and effective.
