Weekly Watch: ‘The Boy’ (2016)

Weekly Watch is a special series for the month of October. Each Monday we’re sharing a movie, and Frightday staffers will host a live review (shared on our Facebook group) the following Friday.

An American nanny is shocked that her new English family’s boy is actually a life-sized doll. After she violates a list of strict rules, disturbing events make her believe that the doll is really alive.

A fresh take on the haunted doll genre, The Boy took the Frightday crew by surprise following its 2016 release. While still perhaps a bit too reliant on jump-scares and choppy editing for the bulk of the film, the third act takes a startling turn that breathes new life into the story. The Boy is a great group watch, which is why it’s the staff pick for this week’s discussion.

The Boy is available to rent through most streaming services, but can also be streamed for free through Netflix.
