Weekly Watch: ‘A Clockwork Orange’

Weekly Watch is a special series for the month of October. Each Monday we’re sharing a movie, and a Frightday staffer will lead a discussion on our Facebook group the following Friday.

In the future, a sadistic gang leader is imprisoned and volunteers for a conduct-aversion experiment, but it doesn’t go as planned.

Simply stated, A Clockwork Orange has a history of controversy. From X ratings to being labeled “pornographic” in the New Yorker to being linked to murder trials, this movie has had a long run of bad press. Whether it’s warranted, however, is up for debate. Many see the film as a piece of art, and one of Stanley Kubrick’s finest works.

A Clockwork Orange is an adapation of the Anthony Burgess novel of the same name. It brought Burgess’ vision of the future to the screen, ultraviolence and all. Aside from the content of the film, others wonder if it maintains the narrative and thematic integrity of the book.

A Clockwork Orange is available to rent from most major online services.
