The Academy Resumes the Shunning of Horror…Almost

The 2019 Oscar nominations are up and notably lacking the level of horror/genre representation seen in 2018. While The Shape of Water and Get Out made headlines with their numerous nominations, the list this year includes just one shout out: A Quiet Place for Best Sound Editing.

Perhaps the genre film from this year with the most commercial appeal, A Quiet Place’s nomination isn’t a shocker. A film that focuses on the absence of sound must have a talented team, in this case Ethan Van der Ryn and Erik Aadahl, behind it. The other nominees for sound editing are Black Panther (Benjamin A. Burtt and Steve Boeddeker), Bohemian Rhapsody (John Warhurst and Nina Hartstone), First Man (Ai-Ling Lee and Mildred Iatrou Morgan), and Roma (Sergio Díaz and Skip Lievsay).

Fans of Hereditary, which amassed a large following, will likely notice the lack of industry accolades for the emotional powerhouse. Other wide release films to garner attention throughout the year that didn’t make the cut include sequels Halloween and Suspiria.

To root for our lone representation in the 2019 Academy Awards, tune into the show at 8pm eastern on ABC on Sunday, February 24.
