’24-Hour Rental’ Streams Soon

This new series, which will be available Oct. 30 on Hulu, is a crime satire that promises to delight and disgust in equal doses. Directed by George Mihalka, Hungarian-born director who brought you My Bloody Valentine (1981), is no stranger to horror, so be prepared for dashes of macabre in this new series that’s been called a combination of The Sopranos and Clerks. Judging from the trailer, you might also want to tack on Twin Peaks and Wayward Pines to the list of shows 24 Hour Rental might resemble. Tracker, our hero, doesn’t strictly fit the stranger-comes-to-town archetype like Dale Cooper or Ethan Burke, but he is trying to turn the page on his old existence after narrowly escaping death. While this series isn’t strictly a horror series, the trailer featured some truly horrific images: a severed head on a platter, a woman wielding a detached, impressively human-looking penis. If it lives up to its potential, this series will entertain while simultaneously subverting some of the conventions of the crime genre. If you enjoy series that make you both laugh and recoil, this might be the perfect thing to binge on this fall.

24 HOUR RENTAL follows former Mafia boss Tracker (Romano Orzari), who having barely avoided early retirement in a shallow grave, now operates a seedy video store. Struggling to stay afloat in the Internet age, Tracker runs his shop as a front for a host of petty crimes, from fencing jewelry to peddling dope cut with Drano and desperation, all in hopes of returning to power.
