Episode 2: The Babadook

This week we talk about Jennifer Kent’s anxiety laden film, “The Babadook”, as well as Evil Dead stuff, Leatherfaces, UFOs, & how the Minnesota Ice Man is not, not a thing.

  1. Hey guys!
Great podcast. I am a huge fan of horror movies so I am super excited to listen to this podcast. I just discovered it yesterday while listening to Sword & Scale. I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoy your podcast and wanted to tell you that my boyfriend and I just finished listening to all of the X-Files!
    Thanks,
    Alexa

  2. Hey!
I am a huge horror/thriller junkie and stumbled upon you podcast while listening to the Sword and Scale podcast.
Just finished listening to this episode, #2, and just had a comment for the ending of Babadook.
I completely agree that the Babadook represented her depression, and the end where she feeds the worms, she is keeping the Babadook (aka her depression) at bay by “feeding it” good memories, or quality time, with her son.
    Just my two cents!
I look forward to catching up on all your episodes so far 🙂

    Thank you!,

    Angelica

    1. First of all, thanks so much for listening! I completely agree with your point! I definitely need to revisit BABADOOK (I don’t even recall what I said), but I feel that feeding the worms was her accepting the fact that the grief of loss will never go away. It’s something she needs to “feed” and learn to grow with.

  3. I’m late to the party but I’m catching up! I wanna say what I think about the book and “monster” from the Babadook. The monster, as you guys touched on, is the mothers manifestation of her depression and (what I think) is a lot of her inability to deal with her husband’s death. I think the book is real and the mother’s first way of loosing her mind. At her niece’s(?) birthday party she says she used to write children’s books so that’s what gives what I think a bit more strength. And then she eventually lets what she wrote in the book manifest unto herself. Mom = Babadook

  4. I just found this podcast a few weeks ago after listening to the Sword and Scale. I just finished episode 2. I was really excited to hear about the Man in the Dark aka Don’t Breathe. I just thought it was interesting that I stumbled upon this podcast right around the time the movie was finally released. Thanks so much!
