Breaking News: Remake of ‘Firestarter’ Confirmed

The Overlook Film Festival opened strong on Thursday night with a new Blumhouse Productions film, Stephanie, directed by Akiva Goldsman. After the screening, Goldsman took to the stage along with Jason Blum to formally announce a remake of 1984’s Firestarter, which was itself the film version of a 1980 Stephen King story.

Goldsman is a veteran producer, writer, and director. He has such credits to his name as I Am LegendParanormal Activity 2, 3, and 4, and A Beautiful Mind.

For those unfamiliar with Firestarter itself, the story centers on a couple with telekinetic powers–gained as a result of a medical experiment–and their pyrokinetic daughter. The original film starred David Keith and Heather Locklear in the parental roles, with Drew Barrymore rounding out the trio as the titular firestarter.

No casting announcements have been made as of yet, but there’s a solid bench of horror talent that can be pulled from to bring this tale to life, so be on the lookout.
