A 666-Character Review of ‘The Possession’

I re-watched this movie recently and remembered why I loved it so much when it first came out. Director Ole Bernadal (Nightwatch) has a refined style of horrifying, creating just enough visual seeds to let the viewer’s imagination fill in the details with material far more disturbing than could ever be explicitly depicted. The Possession brings forward a theme often overlooked in demonic story lines – the Jewish dybbuk. Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Javier Bardem semi-look-alike and star of The Watchmen) convincingly plays a desperate father whose daughter Em (The Harvest’s Natasha Calis) is slowly consumed by an evil spirit that springs forth from a mysterious wooden box. This is the most terrifying child possession film since The Exorcist and should absolutely be on top of your watch list.
