A 666-Character Review of ‘The Evil Dead’ (1981)

The Evil Dead is a 1981 film starring Bruce Campbell. That’s about all I knew going into my watch, other than the fact that it’s the first installment in a cult classic and widely beloved franchise. Guys, I gotta say, I think I may have missed the boat on this one? As much as I do love that man with the glorious chin, The Evil Dead is incredibly over-the-top in such an 80’s horror fashion. Plot-thin and gore-heavy, with very little inciting incident for the events that kick off in such a major way, it’s hard to get enthused over if you have no nostalgic ties to it. All that said, it’s impossible to be too hard on a film like this. It’s fun, campy, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. I’m definitely looking forward to watching the rest of the franchise and hoping to hop on board the fan train along the way.
