A 666-Character Review of ‘Pay the Ghost’

From German director Eli Udel comes this little Halloween horror flick that took me by surprise. I did not go in with significant expectations for Pay the Ghost, but was pleasantly surprised by both the acting and the story. Stars Nick Cage, Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead), and Stephen McHattie (Ponty Pool) are no strangers to good horror. The concept of losing a child in a crowd is one of those archetypal fears that resonates for most, but even beyond that, the film was interesting, compelling, and genuinely scary. Keep your eyes on the screen – some of the best scares are subtle and very quick. Though I would have liked a different direction for the last third, this movie is definitely worth a watch, and will absolutely make my “Top 13 Horror Movies That Take Place on Halloween” list.
