A 666-Character Review of ‘In the Mouth of Madness’

If the point of this film was to make me as the audience feel as if I’d descended into madness myself, then mission accomplished. Unfortunately, not every early 90’s blockbuster starring Sam Neill can be a Speilbergian success, but this odd little package is not without its charms. In the Mouth of Madness follows a ruthless insurance investigator who gets in over his head while pursuing a case of possible fraud involving a popular series of horror novels. When events start to take a turn for the bizarre, things go bad, fast. This Lovecraftian fever dream is overflowing with ill-tempered townsfolk, creepy kids, tentacles, alien fish monsters, and much more. If you’re into the idea of psychological thriller meets psychedelic body horror, this film is now streaming on Hulu and Amazon Prime.
