A 666-Character Review of ‘Diablo’

For a director with only two films under his belt, Lawrence Roeck is no stranger to high-caliber actors; his first movie, The Forger, starred Josh Hutcherson, Hayden Panettiere, and Lauren Bacall. In Diablo, Roeck skillfully unites actors Scott Eastwood, Walton Groggins, and Danny Glover to portray a seemingly-simple Western story of a Civil-War veteran on a mission to rescue his missing wife. It is worth noting that Roeck has also written both of his films and, though Diablo is not broad or complex in its storyline, a close watch reveals impressive depth to the meaning behind the characters, their words, and their actions. Go into Diablo expecting anything but a typical Western, and be prepared to contemplate and analyze the layers of this more-than-meets-the-eye movie.
